Best Bedside Bassinets 2023

Jul 15, 2023

The best bedside bassinets can help make those first few months at home easier for your growing family, especially if you’re recovering from a c-section or difficult birth. Many new parents also find a bedside bassinet convenient if they’re breastfeeding. I used an earlier version of my top pick, the Halo BassiNest 3.0S, with all three of my babies, and even with newer options that have become available since, I would still choose it for my own infants.

The best bedside bassinets are convenient and help to make the first few months at home easier.

A bedside bassinet keeps your baby close to you without putting them in an unsafe sleep environment. In most cases, your baby is so close that you won’t need to get out of bed to tend to them in the middle of the night. Some bedside bassinets swivel over your bed, and some have a drop-down panel to make accessing your baby even easier.

As with any baby sleep product, safety is a top priority. “Since April 2014, federal safety standards for bassinets have been in effect. As a result, all bassinets manufactured in the United States after this date are required to meet the necessary safety standards and obtain the appropriate certifications,” says pediatrician Dr. Mona Amin. Still, she recommends looking for a bassinet that has a sturdy and stable frame, a firm and well-fitting mattress and breathable walls. If you’re looking for other safe infant sleep options, check out our articles on the best bassinets and the best cribs, though we think bedside options are a great choice for many.

If you like having your baby as close as possible without them actually being in your bed (which is unsafe), the Halo BassiNest 3.0S is the best bassinet for you. The height is adjustable for beds up to 30 inches tall, so the bassinet can float over your bed—and using the 360-degree swivel, you can move your baby closer or farther away easily. The bassinet also has a lowering wall, making it easy to pick up your baby. I found these features very convenient while recovering from a C-section. As with most other bassinets, this one has breathable mesh sides for air circulation, which provide ventilation that can help prevent overheating.

Other features of this soothing bassinet include built-in white noise and vibration. You can also remove the bassinet from the base to place your baby on the floor during supervised awake time. This gives your baby a safe place to hang out while you shower, cook, work or play with older kids. Inside the bassinet, you’ll find a thin and firm mattress, but the product also comes with a fitted sheet and a mattress pad. “The Halo Bassinet is a great option for parents who want easy access to their baby in the middle of the night,” says Dr. Amin.

Dimensions: 31.9 x 37.0 x 29.5 inches | Weight limit: 15 pounds (bassinet), 25 pounds (crib) | Height adjust: Yes | Removable bassinet: No | Side that lowers: No | Hovers over bed: No | Storage: Yes

At $130, this is the most inexpensive bedside bassinet on this list, but that’s not the only reason it's earned our best value title. Once your baby has outgrown the weight or skill limits of the bassinet, you can lower your baby down, and transform the product into a mini crib. This greatly extends its usability, as many babies move on from traditional bassinets within a few months.

The bassinet has mesh sides for airflow and the height can be adjusted so you can keep baby close by. It also comes with some soothing musical sounds. With this bassinet, you won’t need to go far for middle-of-the-night feeds and diaper changes—it has a built-in night light and a storage area for diapers, wipes and other necessities. Lockable wheels make it simple to move the bassinet from one room to the next, too. The bassinet includes a mattress that the brand describes as “dense” as well as a sheet.

Dimensions: 33.5 x 28 x 46 inches | Weight limit: 20 pounds (bassinet mode); 35 pounds (changing table mode) | Height adjust: Yes | Removable bassinet: No | Side that lowers: No | Hovers over bed: Yes | Storage: No

The Chicco Close to You Bedside Bassinet has similar features to the Halo BassiNest. It can float over your bed, play music and vibrate for a soothing sensation—and the walls are made of mesh. But that’s not all. It has many additional features that make it worth the extra money if you’re able to splurge. The height can adjust for beds up to 33.5 inches, making it the highest over-bed bassinet on our list. The base is on wheels and has a dual-function handle and brake to help you maneuver the bassinet.

One of the best features is that it has extended use in the form of a changing table. Once your baby has met the weight or skill limit of the bassinet, you can flip the quilted mattress over to the waterproof changing pad side. This transforms the bassinet into a changing table that’s suitable for babies up to 35 pounds. The fabric on the mattress is removable and machine washable. You can also lower the walls once you’re using the bassinet in changing table mode to make changes easier.

If you want to make it easy for your baby to take a nap in any room in your home, choose the Graco DreamMore Bedside Bassinet Deluxe with Calming Motion. It works as an over-the-bed bassinet, but you can also take the bassinet portion off for baby to nap on the floor anywhere in the house. This feature may be especially helpful for families living in multi-story homes because you can carry the bassinet portion from one floor to the next.

On the stand the bassinet can fit over beds up to 32.5 inches, making it one of the tallest options on our list. It also has a handle so you can manually sway the bassinet right from your bed to soothe baby. That’s one of the biggest downsides of this option: It’s relatively costly, but doesn’t have automatic soothing features, like vibration or white noise. It comes with a machine-washable mattress pad, which is helpful if your baby is prone to spitting up or has blowouts in the middle of the night. Like most bedside bassinets, it has mesh sides for airflow and to help prevent overheating.

Sometimes, the most important feature of a bassinet is its storage capacity. Newborns require a lot of things. From diapers to wipes to burp cloths to bottles, your nightstand can get cluttered quickly if you don’t have an organization and storage system in place. The Arm’s Reach Clear-Vue Co-Sleeper Bedside Bassinet has a very large storage compartment on the bottom of the bassinet.

The mesh-sided bassinet can pull right up to your bed and attach to the side with an included anchor strap and plate. The height is adjustable to work with beds up to 30 inches. It also has a drop-down side to make accessing your baby easy. If you don’t want to use it as a bedside sleeper, you can put the side up and wheel the bassinet around your home. Your purchase includes a mattress and a fitted sheet.

I personally opted to use two separate bassinets when my twins were newborns, but I know many twin parents who prefer to have them in the same bassinet. Anecdotally, I’ve also found that many twins prefer to stay close together after spending so much time together in the womb. This twin bedside bassinet provides a safe sleep surface for each baby with a mesh divider in the middle. Each side has a separate mattress and your purchase also includes two sheets.

The bassinet can adjust to five different heights and hover over your bed to keep your babies close; it works for beds up to 27.5 inches. The wheels on the base allow you to slide the bassinet around the house or tuck the stand under your bed. Storage pockets on the sides give you plenty of room to store diapers, wipes and other necessities. Unlike most of the other picks on this list, not all of the walls of this bassinet are made of mesh—however the sides are mesh to provide breathability and airflow. Compared to many other twin bassinets and sleepers, the Simmons Kids By The Bed City Sleeper Bassinet for Twins is a great price, too.

When you choose to use a bedside bassinet, you probably want access to your baby to be as easy as possible, which is why a drop-down panel can be incredibly helpful. The Mika Micky Baby Bassinet Bedside Sleeper has this feature and comes highly recommended with over 8,000 five-star reviews on Amazon. When using it as a bedside sleeper, you can lower the side wall so that baby is within arm’s reach. It has two mesh sides as well as two side storage pockets. This bassinet is also on wheels, making it easy to move around your bedroom or home. The height is adjustable and the bassinet is compatible with beds up to 26 inches tall.

This bassinet has a 33 pound weight limit—the highest of all the options on our list. This might extend the life of your bassinet, but it’s important to keep the skill requirement in mind as well: If your baby can push up on hands and knees before they reach 33 pounds, you’ll need to discontinue using the bassinet. “Once they can roll, it could become unsafe as they may roll onto your bed,” Veneklase says in regard to bedside sleepers. It comes with an attachment system to use when affixed to your bed with the side dropped down, but you can also raise the side and use it as a standalone bassinet. Your purchase includes a mattress and a mattress sheet.

Newton mattresses are hailed for being both washable and breathable, and this gives many parents peace of mind, especially during the newborn stage. This bedside sleeper has mesh walls and an infant access opening, so it’s easy to pick up your baby at night. It can be adjusted to eight different height settings and is designed to be used with beds up to 25 inches tall. When you use it as a bedside sleeper, be sure to use the included straps to attach the bassinet to your bed.

The bassinet has mesh walls on all sides, with the exception of where the drop-down infant access portion is. While it has the typical weight limit of 20 pounds, it does have a larger sleep surface than most other bassinets, which is nice if you have a baby that likes to move around and stretch in their sleep. The bassinet also comes with a travel carry bag and it folds up compactly, a great feature for families on the go. Like a number of options on this list, it comes with sheets—in this case, the sheets are made of machine-washable cotton muslin.

After considering safety features such as mesh walls, a sturdy base and a firm, well-fitting mattress, I looked for the best bassinets that truly provided a bedside option. I only considered bassinets that could do at least one of the following things: hover over the bed, attach to the bed with a drop-down side or adjust its height to be directly next to the bed.

I drew on my experience using various bassinets and sleepers with my three kids, and I also interviewed two experts: Alyssa Veneklase, CED-PIC, Certified Infant & Child Sleep Consultant and pediatrician Dr. Mona Amin D.O.
